Our trip to England

Dear friends,

Here are a few photos and comments about the trip that we took to England from March 12th to March 17th. It was great !

March 13th : Queen's College, Cambridge.

We stayed in Cambridge but we also went to Canterbury, Norwich and London.

"I enjoyed the ferry very much because I like the sea and the ferry was beautiful ! We could go out and look at the sea or go to the shop. The trip from Calais (France) to Dover (England) lasted about an hour and a half. We could look at the horizon. The ferry moved a lot... It was very strange !" Sébastien

The first day, we went to Canterbury. In front of the Christ historic door, our teachers, Mr Wieczoreck, Mrs Schlub and Mrs Letellier were interviewed by a reporter from the local television ! During free time, we went shopping ! We found a lot of very nice shops ! Amélie D

We stayed in Cambridge on the second day. We visited Queen's college, Saint Mary the Great Tower and the Fitzwilliam museum (an art museum) in the afternoon.

First morning in Cambridge : Mrs Dolizy and the girls are in a very good mood !

On the third day, we visited the city of Norwich with a guide. He was very kind and interesting.

Norwich is a small city but there are a lot of historical buildings. The famous "Coleman" mustard comes from there too.

In the afternoon, we visited the castle museum and art gallery. Mélanie and Sonia

On Sunday, we visited London. We took a sightseeing bus tour of the city with our patient driver Jean-Luc in the morning. We saw Big Ben, the houses of Parliament, Picadilly Circus, St Paul's Cathedral, Trafalgar Square... all the most famous monuments and places !

We walked to Buckingham Palace and we had lunch in Hyde Park ! We saw some squirrels ! Wonderful ! We played soccer in the park and slept in the sun ! It was a beautiful day !

Then, we visited the Victoria and Albert museum. It was very good ! Marine and Lucie.

We saw Big Ben, of course... It is very high and beautiful. The hands are as long as a bus ! Mélanie and Céline.

Saint Paul's cathedral was very beautiful ! It is the place where Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer got married in 1981. Amélie G.

What a wonderful time in Hyde park !

The Victoria and Albert museum was probably the place the students enjoyed the most !

We were all very impressed from the beginning to the end of the visit !

Marine chose her favourite painting and sat down to enjoy it ...

We really enjoyed this view and the strange art piece composed of flattened musical instruments.

On March 16th, we went to see the Imperial War Museum

SAINT PATRICK'S DAY !

On our last day, March 17th, Mrs Letellier asked us to wear something green to celebrate Saint Patrick's day, the Irish national holiday and in order to bring us good luck... Look at us !!!

Mr Wieczoreck even had a green shamrock tattooed on his cheek !

Jean-Luc's tattoo said "Kiss me, I'm Irish" !!

Mrs Dolizy's was more discreet, on the neck !!!

We went back to London to visit the Sherlock Holmes museum...

Here we are in front of the Beatles' store, in the same street ! Mrs Letellier is a real fan !

We went back to France through the Channel tunnel.

The tunnel is a dark tunnel. We got into a "box" and moved forward. We sang to make time go by fast ! I enjoyed the trip very much ! Elie.

Happy spring ! A Romanian tradition...

Our Romanian penfriends sent us little gifts named « Mărţișoare » to wish us a happy spring.

These little objects are traditionally offered to women on the 1st of March, that’s why you can only see the girls from our class in the photo.

Mărţișoare are composed of two pieces of thread, a red one and a white one, and a little lucky charm: a horse shoe or a shamrock, for example. The red symbolizes love for all that is beautiful and the white represents purity, good health and the snowdrop, the first flower in spring.
Women must wear them on the left, on the side of the heart.

We had one mărţișor per pupil, sometimes more. I gave mine to my mother. (Yann)

Mărţișoare bring good luck but boys can’t have them. My sister had a shamrock. (Vincent)

I had seven mărţișoare ! I love them !!! (Emeline)

Mărţișoare are small beautiful objects. I gave one to my mother and one to my sister. (Maxime)

Emeline's week end and the celebration of Epiphany

Hello ! Good morning, penfriends !

Last week-end, I went to the swimming-pool. I played with my sister, Oriane. She’s 6 years old.
In my house, I painted my bedroom brown and green.

I rode a horse, my horse Lucky. It is brown.

My family and I shared The Kings’ cake (La galette des rois) : My father was the king.
During the month of January, we celebrate the epiphany by eating an almond filled pastry inside of which is hidden a ceramic little object. Whoever finds it is the king (or Queen) and wears a golden paper crown (In reference to the three wise men).
It was absolutely delicious !

I also did my homework and my projects.

At the beginning of December we decorate the Christmas tree .
We decorate it with garlands and Christmas baubles .
On December 24th, in the evening, my sister, my little brothers and I go up to our bedrooms.
Then my parents set all the presents below the Christmas tree .
We get up to open all the great presents !
P.S : It’s a wonderful moment and it’s funny because my little brothers still believe in Santa Claus !! =)

Christmas at home (by Amélie G.)

I'm going to tell you how I spend my Christmas and new year's day with my family.
Some weeks before Christmas, my brother Alexis and I write a list for Santa Claus!"Laugh"!:
In fact, they are my parents but when we were younger, we believed in Father Christmas. My parents go shopping to find toys and things for us. It isn't easy for them to find everything because we are very demanding !!
.At the beginning of December, my parents, my brother and I decorate a Christmas tree with balls, stars, angels and other things. It is in the dining room. On the windows, we put some Christmas stickers and near the Christmas tree, there is a nativity scene with different characters and animals. Often in the evenings, we take a drive to the city centre or to see the streets of different towns because there are lots of Christmas decorations, like Santa Claus, presents or reindeer, all shining in the night. On the 24th of December in the evening, we are go to eat at my grand-parents’ and we our presents. During the night when my brother and I sleep, my parents put the presents under the Christmas tree. When we wake up. we enjoy discovering all the presents and thank "Santa Claus"! So, during the holidays, we can play with the new toys, before preparing the New Year.
New year's Eve : From the night of December 31st to the 1st of January, we organize a family reunion or friends reunion and we have a very nice meal together, we party all night, we dress up and we laugh. At midnight, everybody kisses everybody and wishes a happy new year. We go to bed very late and we spend the first day of the new year with our family.
Christmas and the New Year's day are very important celebrations in our country and we are very spoilt.

CHRISTMAS AT HOME

Shopping
For Christmas dinner, you have to buy food : the custom is to buy a turkey with chestnuts and a log (a traditional cake), but you don’t have to ! You can decorate the table any way you want (a tablecloth with holly, Father Christmas or candles ...) but we must not forget to put a wreath on the front door and the most important is to have fun.

The Christmas Tree

Our custom is to decorate a Christmas tree. You can buy a real tree, or a tree made of plastic. It may be large or small. After you can decorate several ways with several colours: with electrical garlands or cardboard, with apples pine or sequins. At the top of the tree you usually set a star or an angel.

The Food

The tradition for Christmas dinner is:
-the "white pudding" as a starter.-the"turkey with chestnuts" as main course the"bûche" as dessert. You also need…- love
- joy
- good things to eat. (Do not forget to put on the table: small cakes for Santa Claus and carrots for the Reindeer at the end of the meal).

Midnight Mass
In Fère-en-Tardenois, the Christmas mass is not at midnight but at 10 p .m. The nativity scene and the decorations are prepared by the private Catholic school which is located next to the church. During the Midnight Mass, we sing Christmas songs (such as "the divine Child"), we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Before returning home, drawings made by children are distributed.

Santa Claus
All year long, children must be wise otherwise Santa Claus
will not visit them on Christmas day !
During this time, Mother Christmas and the elves make the presents before the big day: Santa Claus’s tour.
Santa Claus comes to leave presents under the Christmas tree. He goes first see his best friend: the Merchant of Sand, who sprays sand to make the children sleep.
When Midnight rings, everybody is asleep.
Santa Claus can finally enter through the chimney and leave
the presents under the tree and chocolates in the slippers.
Then he eats the cakes that the children have left for him
because he has got a sweet tooth !
In the morning, all the children are happy when they find their surprises !
Santa Claus, Mother Christmas, the elves and the Reindeer can finally rest !

The following day, we receive friends and family or we go to visit them. We have another big meal and everybody is happy especially the young ones who have received presents !

Shopping :
We do our shopping 1 or 2 months in advance. My parents hide the presents in a Christmas box…
Christmas tree :
The Christmas tree is a big tree that you decorate 2 or 3 weeks in advance with coloured baubles and garlands. It is a magnificent multicoloured Christmas tree !
Food :
Traditionally, food is a turkey and vegetables and then for dessert, we have a chocolate or fruit log.

Santa Claus :
According to the legend, Santa Claus lives in the North pole and he visits children’s homes on the 24th of December at midnight when the children are asleep. He goes through the chimney…
Presents :
Santa Claus sets presents in the stockings at night on the 24th of December after midnight . The children sleep when the Santa claus comes. He sets the presents near the Christmas tree .And when the children awake, they find the presents !

Christmas at home (By Emeline)

On the 1st of December, children receive a calendar full of small chocolates and every day they take a chocolate until the 24th December. It is the advent calendar.
For the grown-ups, it’s time for some shopping and the joy to wrap presents and hide them in the attic.
Towards the 10th of December the Christmas preparations start :
- Christmas cards
- Decoration of the house
- The Christmas tree in front the house is decorated and illuminated
- Socks on the chimney that will be filled with chocolates.

On the 24th, the family meets and has a delicious dinner.
After dinner, everyone in the family leaves their slippers under the Christmas tree.
They will see the following day if Santa has visited their house !
